Functional Expertise and its Impact on ROI

चैतद्विद्म: कतरन्नो गरीयो
यद्वा जयेम यदि वा नो जयेयु: |
यानेव हत्वा जिजीविषाम
स्तेऽवस्थिता: प्रमुखे धार्तराष्ट्रा: || 6||

कार्पण्यदोषोपहतस्वभाव:
पृच्छामि त्वां धर्मसम्मूढचेता: |
यच्छ्रेय: स्यान्निश्चितं ब्रूहि तन्मे
शिष्यस्तेऽहं शाधि मां त्वां प्रपन्नम् || 7||

These are the two of the most powerful verses in the Bhagavad Gita, Where we will see, for the first time, Arjun, who is Shree Krishna’s friend and cousin, requests him to be his Guru.

Arjun faced an immense amount of conflict to choose the right course of action. Arjun was debating whether it would be desirable to defeat the Kauravas or to be defeated by them.

When he could not come to a conclusion, he asked the Lord to become his Guru and help him select the right course of action.

A guru is a person who is a master of knowledge. Shree Krishna said in Bhagavad Gita that one should “Learn the truth by approaching a master.

As Corporate Leaders or Individual contributors, we always come across this situation where we need to choose the right course of action from a given set of alternatives.

To choose the right course of action, we must have functional expertise and the proper understanding of the vision statement.

We reach out to our seniors to guide us, but in many organizations, we have seen managers are generalists in nature and not functional experts.

Many research across the globe has shown that this structure lacks the innovation quotient.

On the contrary, Apple is an organization known for its innovative products.

If you look closely at its Organisation structure, you will find that Apple relies on a structure that centers on functional expertise.

 Its fundamental belief is that those with the most expertise and experience in a domain should have decision rights for that domain. 

It helps the entire team to gain knowledge and wisdom from the master.

With this structure change, Apple hit a Market capitalization of 3 trillion.

Functional Expertise directly impacts the rate of innovation, which helps an organization outperform its competitors.

Apple’s success and market cap are the best examples to showcase the importance of Functional Expertise on ROI.

In the entire Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna has emphasized one’s knowledge and has given many ways to acquire that knowledge.

Because of Shri Krishna’s Knowledge and Clarity of vision, Pandavas manages to defeat the world’s Largest and Strongest army.
